Overview

Delhi / New Delhi.

The Indian capital city of Delhi has a long history; Located in northern India on the banks of the River Yamuna, Delhi has the political status of a federally-administered union territory known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT), which in itself is part of National Capital Region.

Delhi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Having been the capital of several empires in ancient India, Many ancient monuments, archaeological sites and remains of national importance have been erected in its history.A history which encompasses all the various kings and emperors who fixed their royal citadels here… Indraprastha, Lal Kot, Quila Rai Pithora, Siri, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, Ferozabad, Dinpanah, Delhi Sher Shahi or then Shahjahanabad, but, combined and integrated into one, these ‘new cities’ have always been called Delhi and howsoever many names it may have acquired, Delhi has always been intrinsically identified with power and imperial sway. Delhi has been destroyed and recreated 7 times. There have been at least seven cities around modern Delhi, and the old saying that whoever forms a new city at Delhi will lose it has come true every time — most recently for the British who founded New Delhi in 1911.Area: 1,483 sq .km

Red Fort : The Red Fort is a 17th century fort complex constructed by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan. Also known as Lal Qila, it served Mughal Emperors as their residence. In the walled city of Old Delhi (in present day Delhi) the fort was the palace for Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan’s new capital, Shahjahanabad. Red fort lies along the Yamuna River, which surround most of the walls. This monument was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

The India Gate is situated in the heart of New Delhi. The India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. Built in 1931, it commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives while fighting for the Indian Empire, or more correctly the British Raj, in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The India Gate complex with a diameter of about 625m covers approximately 306000m² in area, surrounded by most important roads of national capital.

Agra

Agra is renowned as being dwelling to one of the Seven Wonders of the World-the Taj Mahal. Since the 17th century, travelers have crossed continents to come and see this unexceptional symbol of love, and few have been unmoved by its unparalleled gorgeousness. The history of the Taj Mahal is one of the great love stories of the world. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ruled (1628 -1658) and was married to Arjumand Bano Begum in 1612 A.D. He called his wife Mumtaz Mahal or Crown of the Palace, because she was so beloved to him. Mumtaz Mahal died in 1631. Her dying wish to Shah Jahan was that he should “build a tomb in her memory such as the world had never seen before.” The history of the Taj Mahal begins with Mumtaz Mahal’s tragic end. Shah Jahan fulfilled her wish, creating the most beautiful mausoleum the world had ever seen. Shah Jahan was deposed by his son Aurangzeb. After Shah Jahan’s death in 1666 A.D., he too was laid to rest beside his beloved Mumtaz Mahal. Their real tombs are in a basement of the Taj Mahal. The history of the Taj Mahal is the history of the steadfast love of a Mughal Emperor for his Queen.

Taj Mahal :-

Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet) with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon.

The architectural complex of the Taj Mahal comprises of five main elements: the Darwaza or main gateway, the Bageecha or garden, the Masjid or mosque, the Naqqar Khana or rest house, and the Rauza or the Taj Mahal mausoleum. The actual Tomb of Mumtaz is situated inside the Taj. The unique Mughal style architecture combines elements & styles of Persian, Central Asian, and Islamic architecture. Most striking are the black and white chessboard marble floor, the four tall minarets (40 m high) at the corners of the structure, and the majestic grand dome in the middle. On closer inspection, the lettering of the Holy Quran verses around the archways appears to be uniform. The lettering spacing and density has been customized to give this impression to the viewer. The impressive pietra dura artwork includes geometric elements & style, plants & flowers, which are common in Islamic architecture. The level of sophistication in artwork includes a 3 cm decorative element containing more than 50 inlaid gemstones.

Agra Fort

The great Mughal Emperor Akbar commissioned the construction of the Agra Fort in 1565 A.D., although additions were made till the time of his grandson Shah Jahan. The forbidding exteriors of this fort hight an inner pardise. The fort is crescent shaped, flattended on the east with a long, nearly straight wall facing the river. It has a total perimeter of 2.4 k.m., and is ringed by double castellated ramparts of red sandstone punctuated at regular intervals by bastions. A 9 mt. wide and 10 mt. deep moat surround the outer wall.

There are number of exquisite building like the Moti Masjid-a white marvel mosque akin to a perfect pearl, Diwan-e-Am, Diwan-e-Khaas, Jehangir’s Palace, Khaas Mahal, Shish Mahal and Musamman or Samman Burj-where Shahjahan was held captive in 1666 A.D.
